Reena’s Xploration Prompt #281

I recently happened upon an intriguing prompt from Reena Saxena. Below the prompt is an image of a sealed envelope and the text, “Let’s see how you choose to open and decode this message.” The response can be in any format.

So, let’s find out what’s inside…

Hidden in the Everyday

Unexpected, unexplained

At my doorstep, pouring rain

As I hold it, rack my brain

But the effort’s all in vain

My mind’s a kettle, building pressure

Curiosity gets the better

As I unseal this wax-stamped letter

Hidden message escapes, unfettered

Into eagerly awaiting hands

Eyebrows leap, bewilderment expands

For this letter tells of far-off lands

In the heads of strangers, and of friends

Innumerable worlds, tucked away

Inside people you’ve passed by today

Unknowingly filling gaps your way

While universes spread before you, unsurveyed

    Curiosity the key
    To reopen you and me
Sealed and hardened with a stamp
See the writing with a lamp
Set it down and walk away
    Knowing more than yesterday

Yes I know what you do not
Seems I’ve tightened up the knot
    Makes us closer than before
‘Tho between us is a door
    Secret passage to the past
What is sealed but cannot last
Till I see ‘‘twas meant for me”
    Eager curiosity

Yes, perhaps because we are what/who is hiding

The phrase began life quite differently as “Care killed the cat” with “care” meaning “worry/sorrow” (according to Perplexity AI)

Fascinating! This is the first time I’ve heard that. I always thought it was an odd phrase.

So I’m curious as to how it changed! 🤣

Me, too 😂. I googled it and found that the phrase was first used with “curiosity” rather than “care” in a play around the year 1598. 🤔

This is what I found on Bing…The first recorded use of the phrase was in 1598 in Ben Jonson’s play, Every Man in his Humour. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Jonson originated the phrase. When it was used in this play, the playwright wrote:

Helter skelter, hang sorrow, care will kill a cat, up-tails all, and a pox on the hangman.

Seems like both of us became distracted by “when” it changed rather than “how” it changed. I personally find the the latter more interesting

Indeed 😂. Given your previous comment, might it be that someone in Johnson’s play took some creative liberties onstage?

Yes, it appears creativity reflects reality as we face it. Mirth adds emphasis
